You can also avoid the "everyone gang up on the leader" by avoiding being the leader. Be choosy about the provinces you take. Work your way yoward them instead of spreading like an amoeba. It makes it easier to defend the frontlines also. Only when you are setup for the result do you start taking every little province in the area.
