Then you may have a Codec that does not like MP3 format sound files. See the \game data\sounds\wav folder. Read the Sound_problems.txt file, and follow the instructions there to covert from MPŁ to WAV format.
(Converting to WAV format is easier than trying to track down any rogue sound codec you have installed.)
