Long range weapons are best. Missiles. Then you can 'stand off' and blast away until the WPs are gone. (This is one of the reasons I think stock should have longer range seekers.
)
Another approach would be to 'swarm' the planet with fighters. Unless the WPs have plenty of PD cannons, they would be overwhelmed.
