Well, in Lovecraft's cosmos, part of that "placid island of ignorance" was humanity's quaint notion that scientific "law" as we understood it was universally applicable, when "in reality" human knowledge was quite narrow and localized. The further you went from Earth, the more things you encountered that
shouldn't exist, according to our concepts.
