I changed Opacity in the Video Settings panel to about 95. It helps a bit.
The problem could be due to the map you use, due to the stars on black background, or the user interface itself. Whichever your problem is, you can find alternatives from the maps/mods subforum.
EDIT: oops, I didn't realize it was text color in BATTLES. No way to change that.
