Default Re: Iraq Map

The general background is in 2017 the government in Iraq falls in a coup. Iran, PLO, Al Quida, and other "extremist" factions rush in to support the new government. US Marines and a US Army Striker unit (supported by a few heavier forces) are sent in to secure the city and rescue anyone from the former government still alive.

The plan is for the Marines to make a demonstration of crossing the Tigris while the Army races in from the west to secure the Army Base and SAM site. Then the Marines will cross the river and together they'll clean up the city.

Unfortunately just as the initial air strike is hitting the SAM site the Army manages to get itself ambushed (off map). The Marines rush most of their more mobile forces to help bail out the Army (couldn't manage to fit three full battalions into the 500 unit limit, so they'll have only two and not much transport). Initially most of the artillery and air support is busy helping the Army out, tho more and more will become available in later turns.

To add to the "fun" a fast motorized column from Iran is approaching the city from the east and the last thing anyone wants is a large number of fanatics to get into the city proper, house-to-house fighting is very expensive casualty wise.

So the Marines are left with a river crossing VS mostly militia/guerilla/fanatic forces backed with a few high tech (well, as high as Iraq has) units, without "proper" artillery/air support.

The crossing shouldn't be too bad but the city is swarming with 1 to 8 man units armed with rifles, RPG's, and improvised explosives. And they have to rescue the government before they're executed and keep the Iranians from entering the city.
