I finally just decided to turn off Auto-Updates and now I have this little red x shield icon in my system tray.

You can keep auto-update running without installing that particular update. When it wants to install the new update go to custom install instead of the express install. Uncheck the box for that update and I believe when you close the window it will bring up another window asking you what to do with that update. Check the box saying not to remind you again of this particular update. I've done that in the past several times.
