Aha! Finally, an explanation for why 24-bit color exists. I've always been baffled by references to 24-bit color, because I've never seen a video card that produced that setting. Every card I've owned that allowed a color depth above 16-bit jumped directly to 32-bit.
My old ATI Rage Something-or-other 16 MB card had 16-bit and 24-bit, no 32-bit.
