I swap his items around a bit, this was just after I ported him from elsewhere. The thing I find a bit off-putting about Mind Lords and Aboleths is the magic item limit of only 2 misc, and 1 has to be the amulet of the fish for land expansion.

Have you found her brood spawn useful at all? I tend to like imprisoned site searchers, not immobile researchers.

The spawns are mostly fodder, and restricted to underwater, but given Mind Lord's high magic leadership they can fill an army up on the cheap, and they are size 1 so little food usage with them as well. Lobo Guards I feel are better overall, but Polypal Spawns are not all that bad for free. The real issue with them is that if you do secure the seas, you get lots of these little guys that have no real use, so I don't recommend building too many Polypal Mothers.
To be honest, I like using the Polypal Queen mostly due to her concept of her being the progenitor of the entire Aboleth race more than anything else. And she is fairly cheap on extra magic paths too.
I use immobile pretenders for both site searching (ala spells or teleporting around)and constructing magic items that my nationals cannot make on their own. I took imprisoned to get lots of points for this game. I took sloth 3 as I usually do as R'Lyeh ever since talking to Evilhomer however. I had to get air magic for making the fish amulets, and grabbing little bits of magic all over gives me a sizable pool of items I can make. In a previous game as EA R'Lyeh, I had my Polypal queen outfitted with an amulet of the fish to teleport her around to search and cast land-only spells. Having so many magic paths lets me cast all the cheap site-searching spells as well.
