AFAIK planes and SPGs and the like work the same. 6976 icons should be able to fire all round without pivoting, as opposed to the -1 variety.
I've already read that other ways to fix non-turreted icons using turreted slots and blank icons were a no-go and could cause graphic bugs (at least), but of course I never tested...
