 Sure, it's not foolproof, but for 5S it's got it's uses.

 Even a guy with a bladder-stick can do lots of damage. In fact I prefer that to a poison golem. The golem puts out a cloud no matter where he lands (even in your own troops) but a bladder stick only clouds if there is someone standing there for the guy to hit. There are a number of good area affect items, and even spells, which can have a great combat effect with the crane sandals. 
Items which toss out units can be good to give the crane guy also. Popping all over the battlefield and dropping a couple of units in each spot can mess up good formation planning by the other guy.
Its been particularly handy when going up against a well defended castle.
