Very cool idea
I do believe someone had mentioned this possibility before (prehaphs it was even you) - making it into a 'ground' based game. I would take a bit of time, and you would need to find a bunch of art files. Asteroids may make better swamps and forests as during combat they would be scattered about the screen.
