Lord he was of tongue and speech,
Of earthy knowledge and dark caverns,
Hundred years he did listen to the rocks,
Thousand years did he hearken to stone,
Centuries of worthy wisdom,
Came to him this way.

The verseful god contemplated,
Thought it through thoroughly, quite precisely,
As he wandered far across fenlands,
As he scoured brushy sedgelands,
Journeyed through quiet heathlands.

Thought the god abruptly:
"Sloth is so abundant in this place,
Disorder yet more ample.
I know the ways of power,
Of taking and of holding.
And if I have a wisp of principle,
If I do believe in the truth,
Should the earth and sky not be mine?"
