Now drifting off the Balcans, but good matches might be found in Mid Europe as well - for example during the Cold War, Czechoslovakia vs. Poland or Hungary means almost the same kit for both sides, with enough difference in unit names to not get confused
And Map Generator (pbuh) will get you most of times good terrain.
I'd slao recommend starting with smaller battles (both smaller maps than standard and less points), slowly expanding forcesas well as territory.
