That's actually quite logical in a religious kind of way. Your people’s native crops (or whatever Giants eat) are adapted to the natural climate. When you conquer a new province you introduce your own crops since you don't want to eat filthy foreign food not blessed by your god. Religious wars don’t tend to be very reasonable or smart.
