Bear in mind that most afflictions don't actually matter. Limps are mostly taken care of by another star of experience, and even Cripple doesn't matter on a mage. Blind, Chest Wound, and Cripple matter on an SC, and Mute and Feebleminded (or Diseased) matter on a researcher--causing afflictions will annoy your opponent and a D10 bless is good if you've got it anyway, but don't spend the gems on Seeking Arrow unless you're more likely to kill somebody than afflict him.
