It looks like the answer is "no." I did some checking along these lines to see if Mirror Image synergizes with high defense: I modded a Phoenix to have defense 60 and had him cast an A9 Mirror Image vs. a bunch of creatures modded to have 10 attacks each, on the theory that if the synergize (if a Mirror Image'd attack doesn't count) it will take (Images x 20) attacks to whittle down his defenses enough to hit, and if they don't it will take (Images + 20). You could do something similar to check awe, but I haven't ever done so.

By the way, Mirror Image doesn't stop an attack from counting towards the penalty.
