It's my understanding that the milky way can't be visualized from earth. Unfortunately our view is from edge on (and within) and so we can't see many of the galaxy's features. Add in the fact that there are all sorts of "heavy" dust clouds (heavy being a relative term) between us and many of the galactic arms, and you've got Guess-O-Mania. I've read several (low-brow) articles in which astronomers argue the spirality versus bar-shapeness of the Milky Way, suggesting that even the most basic topological questions are likely to remain un-answered.

But, there are plenty of snazzy pics out there, just assign one like every other science writer!
