And serendipity could have you discovering a level 7 spell while doing early research or could complicate things a bit by having a difficult time getting that last site searching spell while studying Thaum for an extra long time.
But what if that mage had a certain rare random, and you didn't get another before he died of old age? And poof, bye bye spell. Also, late game would suck, training mages 10 provinces away from your capital, where all of your scholars are.
