To me Max, they can be okay if they are, and represent, something personal about you (something you can tell a story about), or something about your culture, if you feel a deep connection to it.
I understand the Japaneses making all those enormous tatoos body-wide with their samourai and daemons.
I understand the soldier tatooing on his arm the faces of his wife and his daughter.
I understand the motorcyclist with a heart and "mommy" written inside

I even understand that guy of the Guinness with the 99% of his skin tatooed as a jaguar skin, because he lives deep in the nature...
I don't understand the gym-fanatic who never went out of his little town tatooing the japanese ideograms of his name (or more probably "dumb face", he will never find out
