Default Re: A Rare Win for Ulm

It's incredibly late, but I'm winning and thus two AARs--the battles of Ivermark and Korrmark, two provinces with truly Ulmish names. Coincidentally two provinces once again under Ulmish rule. Still no Bane Lords dead, but I forced one to retreat so yay. I'm running on caffeine and adrenaline which may or may not be a deadly combination but I shall go onwards, for the glory of the Forge!

Ivermark. The only real reward Ulm gained from the war with LA Mictlan and the now-dead toad-kings. It seems that Ivermark attracts Atlantians and their descendants, but it also attracts the Ulmish. It seems that, every time, the Ulmish trounce the Atlantians.

Ivermark was defended by two lone Basalt Kings, armed with only Frost Brands, and an Atlantian priest. The Basalt Kings deftly avoided Magma Bolts by standing still while powering themselves up in order to trounce the Ulmish forces. The Basalt Kings had good initial results, dodging the numerous Magma Bolts thrown at them by Smiths who, it seemed, couldn't hit a whale from five feet away. They easily destroyed the small Black Knight presence, aided by a badly-aimed Magma Eruption.

It was not to be, however. Though the Kings regenerated their wounds, the afflictions remained. The Coral Priest died early to a Magma Eruption, and the first Basalt King died from numerous Arbalest bolts to the face. The second died to a surprising combination of a Bonds of Fire spell cast by a clever smith, numerous spells designed specifically for killing things which somehow failed to do so, and Arbalest short swords to the face, and possibly groinal region. I guess what the Ulmish have in resilience they lack in intelligence.

An Extract from "Memoirs of an Anon", by Gunthamund Haraldson

It was my first real experience in battle, and it was incredible. All the training led up to this; almost no casualties, and the enemy force was routed wholesale. Ulmish magic, though shunned by most, truly saved the day here. Looking back on it, the Ulmish force was truly outdated--we relied on the strength of our steel. Steel breaks before the might of magic, and Ulm broke before the Arcoscephalean, and to a lesser extent Atlantian, onslaught. Without magic, Ulm would have been destroyed, there is no question of it. Not even Monny itself could defeat the might of the entire Arcoscephalean army alone. But on to the account of the battle-

It began well. Though the enemy had numerous priestesses, a Lamia Queen, a Bane Lord, and even a Kithaironic Lion, their force was mainly militia or light infantry who would rout easily and die with just as much ease. A series of Iron Blizzards thinned their ranks nicely. Meanwhile, Magma Eruptions blasted through the Heavy Cavalry and Elephants on one side and the ghosts on the other. Pippin, the Lord Guardian, was nearly killed during it, though. Sadly, he died sometime afterwards during thebattle, though no one is quite sure how.

As the middle began, the Lamia I think began to cast Raise Dead over and over. She has an obsession problem I guess. Meanwhile, I helped a hail of Iron Blizzards eliminate the ghosts, routing the superstitious peasantry under Arcoscephale. Soon afterwards, the Bane Lord met us in battle. It was a sad affair, with his Vine Shield entangling near every man who attacked him. The Kithaironic Lion was killed and soon after the Bane Lord began, he ran in fear. I don't know why, he could have destroyed our entire force. Crazy undead. Crazy Arcoscephaleans, for that matter. While I'm at it, crazy Ulmish.

(note: no mention of C'tissian conflict, referred to in gov't texts dated around same time--perhaps never happened? perhaps afterwards? simply not related to the account? this extract is all we have of a battle during the period, an investigation undergoing)
