I started a similar game (18 players though) and had to resort to hiding in a system off to the side with only warp points in two directions. I just mined the entrances shut and pulled really sad trades with the AI to keep my tech up. (AI trade almost any ship for two of my lesser powered ships then I anylize) I eventually learned the close warp point tech and I've been safe ever since.
