Not sure what you mean by
'pause', complex or subtle would fit. The great thing about diplomacy is that it relies on human interaction, and we are all human here (as opposed to AI). As long as we are in a situation where there can be only one winner the mechanics of the actual game (or real life situation) need not be complex in order for the interactions between the players to become interesting. Some would say that an overly complex game may actually detract from the diplomatic element, while I would disagree the archetypal game of
Diplomacy actually has a very simple ruleset.
