That is a pretty generic error message
And when you have to use the extended Version of a character, it can really push the length limit on the names.
It seems like the profile only rejects the high-bit Version of the é, and not the HTML Version.

Alright, who stole my original P.D. name while I had it changed?!?
Arghh. I think it might be me. Some of my old Posts still show as my original name. This could be bad.
