Its not that surprising, actually. Its the tyrrany of large numbers - which is why that massed slingers are effective against vanheim, and massing is so critical for malverni.

Units have to make morale checks when they lose x% of their number. I believe the first check is at 10%. When they get down to 4 units, they have to make continuous morale checks.

Additionally, the entire force has to make morale checks when the total casualties are high enough.

Elephant morale is low, if I recall, its 8. Home terrain adds 1.
Sermon of courage, adds one (or two). But even if so you're still talking a base morale of 10.

And, with 10 elephants, you have to make your morale check as soon as you loose 1 elephant.


The same mechanics BENEFIT militia. If you have 80 militia in one segment - you don't even get the first morale check until 8 militia have been killed.

So, I'm willing to be what happened ist hat the elephants advanced and either didn't kill 8, or the militia actually got first strike.
