BTW, this brings up a question: if you offer a planet in trade, then change the name, what happens? Does the trade still go through with the old name? Could you make someone think you were giving a good planet, then switch two names and actually give them a crappy one?

Yeah, the game would have to use some unique internal identifier and keep a record of each player's names for each system. Then it would just show that particular name to the player. You could have much more realistic empires with system names all of a consistent style, and even disputes between empires would be more realistic with each empire calling a system by its preferred name.
As for renaming planets to cheat someone on a trade, that's worth testing. If it works it's a bug and someone will exploit it sooner or later. In that case MM will have to implement unique identifiers at least for planets anyway.
