Default Funny thing happen when I was editing planets.bmp

I have edited a whole bunch of pictures 128/36 for incorporation into my mod. I was overlaying them onto existing blocks in the planet.bmp and editing the corrisponding sectType file and it threw my existing map work into a random mess. Would not a 1 for 1 swap of pictures just change the affected coordinate on planets.bmp? The adds I did at the bottom of the file did not make for a problem, just the overwrites.?? Any ideas?
Also for just plain curiosity what mods are in work out there??? Mine is a Game Designers Workshop role playing game called Space 2300 (If any one is familiar with this), it is a circa 1988 paper and pen game designed by some college kids with a very good science background. Mans first bug war with the Kafer(German for bug). I've fleshed out the nearstar map and a few other things when I ran into this problem with my addiction with realism while trying to mod the planets and SectTypes.txt... Any way any help would be appreciated. Larry--And if you want to know why I'm a nut on realism I work at space launch complex 4 at vandenberg afb for around 22 years, I've been on 23 launch crews for Titan II and Titan IV missiles, it kind of makes me think in realistic terms.
