We moved at the same speed but in OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS. My attack fleet was between his fleet and my colony ships. Since we had the same speed, I naturally assumed that when I gave my ships the attack order, they would intercept him, not just fly by and then circle around and chase (and never catchup as you are saying).
