It all depends on the shiny new toy. Take a look at how Triumph Studios dropped the AgeofWonders series which still has an active community to create their shiny new toy called Overlord which has a very dead forum.
While Overlord provided some interesting concepts/ideas it was overall a shallow unmemorable game.
