No idea - I think it is only the case if quick arty is on though. But since I have never bothered with the individual shell-by-shell arty plot since SP1 back in 96 or whenever, I could not say for sure. I vaguely recall a game of SP2 PBEM back in 98 or so as well, and his cluster munitions resulted in a field of exploded tanks and no graphic.
Not something I want to get into the SSI original code for, since the replay stuff is rather obfuscated, to say the least
