If your laptop has shared video memory, then it may need its video card settings tweaked to allocate more shared memory from the pool?.
Also, try the "use GDI" setting on the game options screen to see if there is any noticeable difference between it and DirectX mode. Also, you may need to set the other parameters on the misc tab, as described in "tuning your machine" section of the Game Guide.
Otherwise - if you have the CD version of the game - simply set a size
larger than the desktop and it will run in full-screen "windowed" mode leaving the task bar at the bottom of the screen only.
