Jane's Armour and Artillery 2002 says that the Belgians decided to upgrade only 132 of their Leopard 1A1s to Leopard 1A5(BE) standard and put the remaining 202 1A1s up for sale. The Brazilians originally purchased 87 of these “unmodified Leopard 1 MBTs”. The first batch of 33 vehicles was delivered “late in 1997”.

Jane’s Armour and Artillery 2005-2006 states that the Brazilian inventory included “128 unmodified Leopard 1 MBTs from the Belgian Army” in 2005. There is no mention of upgraded Leopard 1A5s.
