Not only are they exceptionally hard to mass (even in vanilla), which is pretty critical for archers, they're also longbows in LA, where everyone has like protection ~17 on their front line.  Jomon can cast flaming arrows, but then you'd rather have easily massed indie archers instead of resource expensive samurai archers, even if they do have shortbows.

 Well they're more durable and can hold their own in melee.  I am, however, perplexed why they received a precision nerf in cbm.

 I will certainly agree with being perplexed by the CBM change.
The problems with samurai archers in a dual roll are two fold.  On the one hand, the katana samurai that they default to isn't very good either, so they aren't a good melee option.  On the other hand, expected opposition in LA is going to laugh at longbows.
Compared to dai-bakemono archers in MA, who are good, the dai bakemono benefit from having actually good stats *and* weaker armor on the opposition against which the longbow is relatively better.
