Not only are they exceptionally hard to mass (even in vanilla), which is pretty critical for archers, they're also longbows in LA, where everyone has like protection ~17 on their front line. Well they're more durable and can hold their own in melee. I am, however, perplexed why they received a precision nerf in cbm.
I will certainly agree with being perplexed by the CBM change.

The problems with samurai archers in a dual roll are two fold. On the one hand, the katana samurai that they default to isn't very good either, so they aren't a good melee option. On the other hand, expected opposition in LA is going to laugh at longbows.

Compared to dai-bakemono archers in MA, who are good, the dai bakemono benefit from having actually good stats *and* weaker armor on the opposition against which the longbow is relatively better.
