Well, technically, most of us Americans are descended from people who got kicked out of all the other countries. (Obviously, this doesn't include those of full "Native American" blood, but that's a completely different story altogether). So, in reality, the rest of the "civilized" world "gave" us America by sending all their misfits over here. A tradition that has continued to the present day. After all, the Statue of Liberty asks for "your poor, your downtrodden, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free", not "your rich, educated, pampered select few" . Georgia even started as a penal colony (of course, so did Australia, but I'll leave THAT discussion for our Aussie members ).
