You can also give your mages a few extra gems, and even script them so that they won't use the gems until the script is done... and then wait and see what happens. They will surely spend the gems, if they live long enough. But on what? It's a fun surprise!
...Unless they just use the gems to reduce fatigue incurred by Raise Skeletons or something.
