Quite so.
I regularly start with line infantry and then convert those to guards elements later on, as the guards infantry tend to have better weapons (esp personal A/T weaponry)than line. Tank elements in a guards formation are however the exact same as in line formations, with the morale and experience boost being part of the formation as Don says.
If you started a later campaign (post 1/1942) where guards
formations are available, then it may be worth your while starting with those in your core.
