It this really going to work? Why make that dish out of salt? And hoisting the thing up on a tree and waiting for lightning to strike sounds kind of iffy... If will be really cool if it worked, though.

Well, there are about 6 pages of discussion attached to that link, and none of the people taking part said "This is utter nonsense, it will never work", although the design and it's limits are tweaked. By the end they are talking about using it to inscribe a logo on the moon=-)

For one thing, they decided it would be easier to get a lightning strike by sending up a small rocket, trailing a conductive wire.

Not sure about the salt, since I know nothing at all about the physics of lasers, but it seems to be necessary...
