Fyron,
I agree that's what they're for. The point is, they're incredibly cheap for what they do. A technology that can;
- Defeat any level of cloaking
- Automatically distinguish friend from foe
- Intercept targets with 100% success rate
- Are completely undetectable (unless using the Soviet method)
- Move so fast that they can cover huge volumes of space, and chase down ships no matter how fast they are
- Are so smart that they destroy all targets simultaneously, so none of the enemy has the chance to stop or flee
is pretty damn amazing!
My experience of mines is that once they're on the map, the risk they pose paralyses any early game opponent. At that stage, no one can afford to build a fleet of minesweepers (plus the fleet of warships that is supposed to go with them), and few will want to risk the resource cost of trying to use one or two - because you never know how big a minefield is.
I think it's fun playing in the early game when you're not hiding behind a solid border of mines, and are constantly having to trade-off between defese and economic development.
I enjoy fighting wars with early tech, when a few ships have to cover a big border.
I'm not arguing that mines are unbalancing - anyone can use them - but they are very boring.
IMHO.
