You're not missing anything. It's just simply that the baseline mr check is 12 in the game as a whole, not 10 as you would expect.

It has nothing to do with bob or his magic paths really (and I'm pretty sure blood skill don't affect the mr check for blood vengance), but it explains this battle a bit.
