Sounds are not given any great level of priority in this incarnation of Steel Panthers. Cross has done some good work in this regard, as an add-on. Look for the posts entitled "Cross Sounds".
BTW - the sounds were one of the things I disliked when playing SP:WAW (v5 or thereabouts). I'm sure the sound effect for an AP round striking a tank was that of a railway engine squeaking on a tight bend... Yeeurgh!
