Best advice I've found with regards installing programs on Windows 7 is to imagine you went away for the weekend, and while you were away you let your missis organise and store all of your belongings. Meaning that when you got back your missis could find absolutely anything you might want within seconds, but that you'd never manage to find it yourself if you looked for a thousand lifetimes.
So in short, my user guide for Windows 7 would be if you want to know where things are, and you want things to stay where you put them, then don't ever allow anything to get installed in the Program Files folder unless you have no choice.
