Press <F2>.
Select "Options" from the list that pops up; it's about in the middle.
De-select (make it so there is
no green dot) the entry "Animate ship movement in main window"
Select "close", which is way down in the lower right.
Resume play; ships move almost instantly, rather than slowly cruising along.
