Default disappoint

My ghost king pretender decided (unscripted) to cast stoneskin in battle.
He lost some of his cold resistance.
He was surrounded by his ghastly bodyguard.
He died of hypothermia.

Maybe some units should have resistance over 100%?
For example, an Abysian, made of lava, shouldn't become so easily vulnerable to that which he is made of, no (actually, that isn't the best example because the only spell I can think of that reduces fire resistance is barkskin, and i think it's safe to say that bark on lava is a terrible, terrible idea)?

Or is there some surefire means of preventing your commander from casting stupid spells (I believe he was SUPPOSED to start with nether bolt or that other death bolt).
thx

I still have the turn, if anyone wants to verify
