Vista is the "Windows ME" of the early 2000s. I'd describe
it as the "bad Microsoft patch" in question ...

The best way to patch vista IMHO, is to apply a Windows 7 upgrade to it. It is the fixed version of Vista, after all. And probably cheaper than a new PC.
