Default Setting formation to AI control

Sometimes - if a formation has to travel a long distance or if it is a very big scenario (I do not like micro-management), I like using setting formation-waypoints and putting it under AI control.

I do not fully understand what happens after there is no waypoint left. Does then the AI unit more or less 'defend' its current location or does it act as it would be completely under AI control - that is trying to achieve victory points?

Actually, I think I have seen both behaviors. I played a generated Air Cavalry(Vietnam era) scenario and it was quite funny that the AI loaded my troops into the helos and moved it to another place - although obviously it was not the intention, which I had in mind

Thx.
