Yes to all of this.
As for which slot gets chosen, I'm unfortunately uncertain. I
seem to remember the wished item ending up in the leftmost possible slot each time I tried it, and it also makes the most sense to me as to the 'logic' of the game's engine - as far as I know it at least*, but I can't swear to it. Also, as far as I can remember I never used it to displace a cursed item, so I'm afraid you'll have to do some testing. (Or wait for another kind soul to answer your question.)
*Also, also, trying to decipher the logic of the game's engine is a tricky business at best.
