Love that game in some way, although I never really got it going.
Have a decent fortress atm, but I am at the point where I need to build military.

The military system... I think that took 3 hours for me to get working. And then I got so many invasions that I realized that I should have started building the military in year one. (Of course I played some odd mod that added mindflayers and more stuff).
