Nope, iirc you still need to hit. (A shield could stop the vine arrow).
Spells with flysprites can be stopped by shields iirc. (I don't really have a lot of knowledge about this so I could be wrong).
So tangle vines is more likely to hit. Earth grip is E, not N, so it is a different path for the same type of spell. All of them are SC stoppers. (Unless the SC has quickness, then you are hosed)

But I think I have seen a vine arrow kill one unit and then entangle on other, but I don't know if I just dreamed that.
