To be honest until now I did never need the T-W-key-procedure because I thought I could select the weapons to use more easily by turning off the other ones...please correct me if I'm wrong.

Probably a case of six of one and half a dozen of the other. I find the given process quicker for me, since I am used to it.
Plus I prefer a few quick keystrokes over fiddly mouse pointing and clicking to turn weapons off and then reversing the process once finished. (Or forgetting to turn them back on, as I tend to do
!)
